College is a great time for you to get out on your own and experience all that life has to offer you. However, life costs money and not everyone will have the luxury of their parents being able to provide them with money whenever and wherever they want it. There is nothing wrong with this, but if you don't want to miss out on all the fun you might want to think about getting a job. No, you cannot get a normal job that pays really well and still have time for your crazy work schedule and a social life. However, you can find certain jobs that will provide you with a little extra cash and be flexible with your school schedule. This article will look at certain jobs you can hold during school and not miss out on doing the things that you want to do.

One of the most popular and best paying jobs is to work at a restaurant as a server or as a bartender. For the sake of this article will also include working at a bar. It all depends on the type of restaurant and the clientele. This job is best for people who are really laid back and have no problem talking to people. You are likely to meet lots of crazy people while you are employed, so a sense of humor wouldn't hurt. I have seen people make enough money in on e night to pay for most of their bills. You are able to establish a schedule that is best for you and still get your work done. Make sure you keep your head on straight though. Some people that work in this industry might not be the best to hang around and you do not want to get mixed up in things that would hinder your education.

Another great job is to work at a day care or be a baby sitter. No this is not only for girls. Guys can be just as fun for the kids to hang out with and just as responsible. Typically in a day care you will only make minimum wage but it is a great way to meet people that are looking for sitters. When you are a sitter you can work the nights that you want and decline the one that you cannot.

Another option is to work in retail. Typically your shifts are only four or five hours a day and you pick the days that you are willing to work. This can be a very fun job as well because you are able to talk to all sorts of individuals and help them find what they are looking for.

Another good job is to be a personal assistant for an individual or company. Most of these people look specifically for college students to help them run a few of their errands. They are able to help you out and pay you and you help them buy freeing up some of their time. It is a win win situation for everyone.

When you are looking for jobs that will fit your school schedule, look at your school's paper. Usually many people post to a college paper when they are specifically looking for people with flexible schedules.

Like most sales people, college recruiters are responsible for selling their business. And it is crucial, when making the college decision, that you do not fall for their sales pitch.

You might attend ceremonial affairs hosted by the university such as fundraisers and commencements. At each affair the President of the college is responsible for selling his university the same way a CEO is responsible for selling his business. He has a sales pitch also.

In almost every case the sales pitch is education. This is generally seen as the primary role when "selling" the university to us. The education role is obviously one that is also a priority to students, parents, and benefactors. There is nothing wrong with that. Education is important and we have seen what an excellent job elementary and secondary schools have done in educating our sons and daughters. But when it comes to higher education...

Don't be fooled

Education was the most important part of the college experience in the 1960's and 1970's. Then the cost of a college education was relatively cheap compared with today's sky-high prices. And after you graduated you could get a professional entry-level position. Think of it. You could attend college, receive a great education that was the envy of the world, and actually be able to use that education to start a career.

Today you are neither educated nor employed

Many corporations today only recruit seriously from top-tier universities and foreign colleges. It is from these schools where professors who have spent years in their chosen fields of endeavor teach students. On the other hand, most professors in our second-tier schools are academically qualified but lack significant professional field experience.

(Note: I refer to top-tier as only one to two dozen élite colleges across the nation. These are Ivies and several select colleges such as MIT and Johns Hopkins. Second tier colleges are all the rest, well over 99% of all colleges.)

American corporations have little time to waste on college graduates who graduate from honors programs and have trouble reading and writing grammatically correct sentences. So don't expect them any time soon to seriously recruit from the college you attend to hire entry-level professional employees.

But you are paying $200,000 for a four-year college education that for many students is close to valueless. This is $200,000 that you could spend on other things.

Unemployed four-year graduates may even decide to go to graduate school to delay paying back student loans. After graduation, you scrape as much money together as you can, and try to pay it all back. And after it's all done what do you have? Whatever it is, for most graduates, it's not enough.

What should the sales pitch be?

Here's the sales pitch that all colleges should use today: A degree from our college will help launch your career. 75% of our graduates, within one year, are earning $50,000 in the field of their choice. Now that's a great sales pitch!

So what's your point Professor Roberts?

My point in all this is that you must change the way you think about a four-year degree. Success in a professional field generally requires a college degree. But when selecting a college, you must select a university that you can leverage for your own personal success. If the university you select neither educates nor provides the starting point for a professional career you should look elsewhere.

And above all, understand that in making the college decision, you must look to generate a return on your investment. You must demand a return on the money and time you invest. That means selecting a college that gives you value. Look closely at the university. Spend time making your decision. And do not be fooled by the college recruiters' empty sales pitch.

College admissions officers are real people with a tough job to do. Every year they choose a new freshman class, based on certain key characteristics and qualities that are revealed on the students' applications.

The college application essay has become an essential tool by which admissions officers make their decisions. These essays are meant to give the college a true sense of the student as a person. They highlight a unique or special side of the student, by creating a personal and positive image.

Writing a successful application essay requires a good amount of self-reflection. The student needs to get in touch with feelings, motivating factors, and strengths that express the core of his or her personality.

While there are no right or wrong answers to the writing prompts, admissions officers use these criteria for evaluating the essay.
Does the student come across as a real person? Is the writing straight from the heart? Is the essay distinctive?Does the student give a sense of who they are?

In the entire application process, the student has the most control in the essay portion. Through these words, the student can create a snapshot of their lives, personality, and even philosophy. Yet, it needs to be accomplished with a genuine tone.

Specifically, the admissions officers are looking for the student's 'voice'. They need to hear that the student is more than the sum total of their GPA and SAT scores. Officers listen for the intangible and immeasurable moments that make up a person's life, and the student's evaluation and interpretation of those moments.

A trick to capturing a sincere writing style is to first verbally answer the writing prompt. Look into a mirror and pretend that you are speaking directly to the admissions officer. Jot down your key points as well as some the expressions you use to make those points. The terminology you normally use will convey a sense of realism to your reader.

Speak from your heart. If you are passionate about a subject or event, say so. Has a challenge impacted your life in a positive way? Share that moment with a vivid description of your feelings.

The essay should distinguish you in some way from all the other students who are also applying to that college. No, that is not a dauntless task, but one in which you are already thoroughly equipped.

Every person is unique. Your life has been made up of individual moments that have shaped your character, goals, and dreams. Writing about these distinctive moments sets you apart from the crowd.

Always keep in mind that the sole purpose of this essay is to communicate who you are as a person. Write as if the admissions officers are truly interested to read about you, because they really are.

College is much like hiking the backcountry. You pack, prepare, then anxiously await departure. Along the way you find yourself facing seemingly insurmountable peaks and long-awaited valleys. When you finally arrive at your destination, you look back with pride and feel a sense of accomplishment. I never begin a trek without a small survival kit so why would you head to college without one? Below we have complied a list of often overlooked items that will be sure to come in handy throughout the college experience.

First Aid

Whether it be a wicked paper cut while studying for finals or the homecoming tailgate that got out of hand; a first aid kit is often forgotten until one is needed. We suggest a snack size Ziploc bag. They are small, easily replaceable and watertight as long as yellow and blue made green. Be sure to pack your bag with various sized Bandaids, gauze, and alcohol pads. Also include a thermometer and a travel pack of Tylenol and Motrin.

MultiTool

You don't have to spend a fortune on the latest Leatherman, but a good multitool will come in handy. At some point you'll find yourself building a laminate bookcase, tightening car battery connections or breaking and entering into your own dorm room. Not to mention, most of the multitools have a bottle cap opener. Luckily for the female readers, many multitools can now be found in feminine hues that will likely match your daily accessories.

Dorm Room Readiness

First-and-foremost, be sure to pick up Febreeze! It will leave your room smelling clean and fresh or allow you to put laundry off for one more day. We have also found it exceptionally hard to sleep with your roommate having a party of one techno get together so ear plugs and a sleep mask aren't a bad idea either. If you forget your earplugs, you are sure to destroy things attempting to get to sleep. For this, a small mending kit will become beneficial. Finally, throw in some Coffee Nips and be sure to keep all those pizza coupons that come in the mail. Buy one get one free becomes a quick lesson in economics for many college students.

In the end, what you include in your survival kit is up to you. There is no "perfect" kit. Pick a few things from our list and add a few items of your own. We do highly suggest making two kits. One for your dorm room and a smaller one for your car or purse. You will find them to become invaluable in your time of need. We wish you luck on your college adventures.

Scheduling a college interview is a smart move for students who wish to be more competitive in the admissions process. A college interview can show the admissions committee that you have good people skills and a lot going for you. Of course, an interview could also go the other way, and you could make a bad impression. In order to make your college interview an asset rather than a mistake, you should prepare in advance by reviewing some guidelines for a successful interview.

First of all, it is important to make a good impression, appearance-wise. College admissions officer are sure to notice your personal grooming and attire immediately if it is not up to standard. If you are dressed appropriately, however, your appearance will likely not come to attention at all, which is your goal. You want your interviewer to focus on what you are saying, not on your poor choice of clothes or the fact that you forgot to shave.

Some rules to keep in mind when dressing for an interview is to avoid clothes that are too casual or too revealing. Business casual is usually a good idea, but first determine the setting in which the interview is taking place. Is it a formal one-on-one interview or a casual group interview? You usually cannot go wrong with a nice pair of dress pants for men or women and a neatly-pressed shirt or blouse.

Also keep in mind that your interviewer will notice your body language. Being nervous likely won't be held against you. After all, you may have never had an interview before, and being slightly anxious shows that you are taking it seriously. If you slouch or behave too casually, however, you may appear careless. Avoid crossing your arms or adopting any defensive or unfriendly body language. Avoid scratching yourself, touching your hair, chewing gum, or fidgeting in a way that may be distracting to your interviewer.

It is a good idea to prepare yourself for some commonly-asked interview questions in advance, so that you are not left stuttering when a question takes you by surprise. You will commonly be asked about your interest in the college, your goals and intended major, the activities you are involved in, etc. While it is okay to know ahead of time what you are going to say, you should not sound rehearsed. Answer every question conversationally, though you should never use excessive slang or any bad language.

Also answer honestly. Your interviewer will be able to tell if you are being insincere or giving the answer that you think he or she wants to hear. While it may be necessary to soften the truth, you should never make false statements during an interview.

Remember never to brag. Naturally, you will want to exhibit self-confidence and show your interviewer that you are a student worthy of admission. This is not the same thing as going on and on about how great you are. You should master the art of talking about your accomplishments without seeming arrogant.

Finally, remember to ask some intelligent questions of your own! One major reason for scheduling a college interview is to demonstrate your interest in the school. If you are yourself, express your desire to be a student at that college, and demonstrate your worth as an individual, you will surely have had a successful interview. Keep in mind that some students earn their college degrees from accredted online universities. If this is the case for you, perhaps you can have a virtual interview with a prospective school.
