Life in a sprawling university campus may be overwhelming to most college freshmen who have gotten used to the ins and outs of high school life. It's a different world out there and one must be prepared to start over and adapt to this new environment. Making the transition may be easy for some, but not for others who do not know what to expect on their first year of college. Everyone has their own idea of what college life is all about. Some get it through stories told by their parents or older siblings, others assume it's just like what they see on movies and on TV. The truth is, the college experience is different for each person depending on what school they choose to attend, what classes they choose to take and their over-all attitude towards school and studying.
Learning Isn't Just Limited to the Classroom
College is the time for young adults to spread their wings and learn to be independent while getting their degree. College freshmen often experience this kind of freedom for the first time in their young lives. There are no parents constantly bugging you to study or do your homework and you get to choose the classes you take. This teaches students to be responsible and to learn from their mistakes. Life in the university also allows students to interact and socialize with different types of people they normally don't meet in high school. This environment allows students to explore possibilities they didn't even know about before and helps them make the transition from kids to young, responsible adults. Sure, kids will be kids and they take a few wrong turns along the way, but that's just part of the learning process. What is important is that they learn from their experiences as much as they learn from their professors.
Some people don't take their stay in the university seriously, while some work even harder than they did in high school to graduate with honors. The path you take while in college depends on your goals for the future. Some people know what they want to do even before graduating from high school, others have a change of heart in the middle of the semester, and there are quite a lot of students who have no idea what their future will be and are just figuring things out along the way. Whatever your frame of mind is like when you enter college doesn't matter as long as you maintain a positive attitude during your time in school. All of this is just a part of growing up within the walls of the university.
